in the Italian Renaissance

Humanism and Platonism_vol. 1_alt.jpg

Volume 1 published by Edizioni di Storia e Letteratura, 2003

Humanism and Platonism in the Italian Renaissance collects James Hankins' major articles on the topic to date (2004). Volume 1, Humanism, is devoted largely to Leonardo Bruni, a leading humanist of the fifteenth century, whereas Volume 2 revolves around the revival of Platonism in the Renaissance.

The essays treat the fortuna of the classical tradition, the writing and reception of works of humanist literature, the role of patronage, Greek studies, philosophy, philology and theology, and modern understandings of the Renaissance.

Volume 2 (2004)

“These two weighty volumes represent an achievement that most scholars would envy at the end of their career. Yet their author, James Hankins of Harvard University, is still astonishingly active as a scholar and as an editor.”
